Google Checkout was launched, they have an API so I can integrate it into packages like osCommerce or custom eCommerce sites. Should be much easier and cleaner than using PayPal IPN. Their fee structure is very attractive too. $.20 + 2%.
I was worried about the non-refundable $.20, coz if I were to write a OSC contrib I would be testing it quite a bit and they do add up. But you can actually use a “sandbox” account, not bad…

I am uneasy every time I have to reboot my server remotely, my Treo wouldn’t stop ringing if my clients’ sites are offline for an extended period of time. Yesterday I had to upgrade my kernel due to several remote and local exploits, I used Aptitude to upgrade my kernel packages and the installation script advised me to reboot ASAP as some of the kernel modules were modified. I guess I didn’t have any kernel modules that are reloaded on the fly, so my server actually worked fine without a reboot. I waited til 2am PDT to do a reboot and it magically came back up. Kudos to the Debian kernel packages maintainers. 🙂

JeremyT (Sling Media)’s Blog – Mac Update:
Well, I have a bit of news. Unfortunately, while it’s probably not exactly what you wanted to hear, I hope you understand just how tricky some things are to manage for a small company. Bottom line is despite our initial intent to deliver a Mac/OSX version of the SlingPlayer in Q2’06, we are moving our target to Q3’06.
Well, no Slingbox for me til Q3’06. 🙂

So you use Flickr and you built your cool Flickr badge, you’re all ready to show it off at your MySpace profile, only to find out that most of these sites don’t like JavaScript (nor iframes), mainly because whoever created these site didn’t really know what they were doing… Here’s a way to display some of your Flickr pics dynamically at these sites:
So, now when you tag your pics with “slide.com” at Flickr and they will show up at your Slide.com Flash photo banner, obviously, to remove pics just delete the tag. Unfortunately there is not an easy way to batch-remove tags at Flickr at this point.

ScienceCareers.org | Scientific Success: What’s Love Got to Do With It?: Levine: 26 May 2006:
Kanazawa’s perhaps controversial perspective is that of an evolutionary psychologist. “Men conduct scientific research (or do anything else) in order to attract women and get married (albeit unconsciously),” he says. “What’s the point of doing science (or anything else) if one is already married? Marriage (or, more accurately reproductive success, which men can usually attain only through marriage) is the goal; science or anything else men do is but a means.
Seriously, how many social networking sites do we need? $15m? holy shit man, maybe I’ll start one too… so I can buy up Loopwheeler and Spruce after I cash out… LOL…
You?re reading it here first: Bebo, an SF-based social networking site which is in the middle-ground between MySpace and Facebook, and among the biggest in UK, Ireland and New Zealand, has received $15 million in venture funding from Benchmark Capital.Bebo will use the funding to expand the U.S. team and open a London office. It has also hired a chief privacy officer, who will be announced soon.
Bloggers Blog: Bebo Raises $15 Million in Venture Capital Financing
I mentioned in my previous blog entry that I am only install Skype as my IM client on my work laptop, so when I need to chat with friends who are too lazy to get onto Skype, I use Meebo, and it works pretty well, now they even support chat history if you create a Meebo account… I checked out their blog and foud this thing called Meebo Repeater, it works kindda like a p2p repeater that bounces your traffic between one another and finally to Meebo’s server… So if your company blocks Meebo at the firewall, you can get to it via these repeater nodes… pretty cool idea, I don’t need it coz I use an SSH tunnel to my own Squid proxy, but some of you guys might want it… I also like how they told you what they integrated to build this…
What?s the meebo repeater and is it safe?
The meebo repeater can only access meebo.com, so unlike other proxies that give anyone access to any site from your computer, the meebo repeater can only be used for chatting. Also, the meebo repeater supports SSL and non-SSL so you don?t have to worry about anyone reading your IMs.The repeater is also fully open source and built on top of rinetd which has received many years of testing. And if we ever find a critical bug, we can disable all of the repeaters remotely and ask everyone to upgrade.
