24
So 24 was finally over, the 2-hour season finale was GOOOOD, although a bit predictable. (and it was too easy to find the projectile of the missile and only took one shot to shoot it down) Have to wait til January 2006 for the next season, damnit… Since I didn’t watch the show until this year, maybe I’ll rent them out at Netflix… 🙂
Also notice they use Verizon for their cell services and the RAZR V3 was shown all throughout the episode!! Does that mean VZW is getting the RAZR soon? 🙂
Update: According to this thread, “Michelle” has always used a RAZR, so I guess they weren’t implying anything…
Jack Welch Q&A
I received an Evite from the Bootstrapping networking group to attend a Q&A session with Jack Welch at Book People today. It was cool to see the legendary Jack Welch in person. Here are my notes:
“right players” is key
always hire ppl better than u
HR is key
20 70 10 differentiation
20% most important
70% improve
10% get rid of them, and do it immediatelyGE development
HP CEO, Carly, didn’t develop from within, cost HP a lot of money when it didn’t work out, 22m severance pkg, lack of HR training was the problemQuestion: male and female difference as leaders:
top high positions: noneexec compensations
ppl need to have dreams
stock options didn’t matter
caps on salary don’t workassessments on CEO’s perf: lots of things he mentioned to gauge his success
91% stocks go to non top-150hiring from outside: best interview question: tell me about ur last job? And listen!
Eat sandwiches for as long as you can – then you have the negotiating power… Compensation between investor and entrepreneurs is supply and demand, if you got quality, you have the upper hand.
Don’t spread equity equally, it gives the wrong results; it offends the good people and keeps the bad people on board longer. And it will become a dental plan overnight, which is the last thing you want.
manager: being from bout u 2 about THEM!!!

Netflix
Since Sherry will be in Europe for 2 months starting this week, I have just joined Netflix… Last time I was a member was like 6 years ago when they first started… I had to ship DVDs to California so it was a >1 week turnaround… Not I heard is much better, with a local Austin P.O. Box or something…
I’d also use this time to do more consulting, build a couple proof-of-concept ideas I’ve had recently, blog more, read a few books, read ALL my Economist magazines cover to cover, and do more photography… 🙂

Nivi : Charley Polachi on Recruiting VCs
This is interesting:
The worst example of excess I have witnessed was when I interviewed a 31-year-old venture professional in San Francisco. When we got to talking about compensation, he told me he made one million a year, $250,000 in base salary and an excess management fee of $750,000. I asked, ?Why are you taking an excess management fee in distribution?? ?Well,? he answered, ?it?s in the contract. I?m allowed to do that.? And I responded, ?But you guys didn?t invest anything last year and you are not likely to return a dollar to any of your LPs in the near future. Aren?t you worried about clawbacks and people looking at this when you go to raise your next fund?? His attitude was, we will deal with that when we get there.
