From Saturday’s photoshoot with Katie

First photoshoot in months, the pics turned out pretty nice, especially when I had absolutely no planning or concept for the shoot…

The shoot went for about an hour, I got about 400 pics, around 3GB… Post-processing them should keep me entertained for a while… Oh yeah, now I have 1.5GB of RAM, PS works way better than before… 🙂

Gallery2 and Safari

I’m not very impressed with the performance of Gallery2, it’s MUCH MUCH slower than G1. I understand it has database backend, the codebase is huge in comparison, yada yada yada… Still, vB is pretty big and it runs quite fast on my server.

I also tried viewing my G2 gallery in Firefox instead of Safari on my PowerBook, and guess what, Firefox is MUCH faster! I know, Safari is not the fastest browser anymore, but still, there must be something about how G2 does CSS or the dynamic shit that makes it super slow in Safari (and probably Konqueror too).

I don’t recommend upgrading your gallery to G2, or using G2, unless you have more than 4k pictures. My snapshot gallery had around 3k pictures and it worked just fine. I guess I could downgrade, my G1 installation is intact, I’ll have to think about this more…

Snapshot gallery upgraded to G2

I messed up the album database of my snapshot gallery, had to restore from a known-good backup and apply the difference since the backup was made, not a problem. I then decided to upgrade to G2, the upgrade went smoothly, was able to import my Gallery 1 albums without any problem. There was a minor annoyance though; there should a default layout for the top-level gallery, and one for the albums. I wanted the classic theme for the top-level page coz it shows one album per row with the sub-album tree on the right. But for each album, I wanted to use the matrix theme so I get 3 items per row. To accomplish this, I had to set the default to classic, and went into each individual album to change its theme to matrix. Took a while with the number of albums I have.

Also, in the Edit Album page, there should be an option to apply the changes recursively to each sub-album in the tree, this was there in G1, no reason why they can’t do it in G2. It would’ve saved a lot of my time if I was able to set stuff recursively. 🙂

new toy

So now I no longer live 5 minutes away from Kevin Lu, I don’t have access to his nice Canon i9900 photo printer. Solution to this problem? Asked Amazon to send me my own i9900… It’s sweeeet! 🙂

Need to pick up another 15-bucks end table from Ikea to put it on.

Canon PowerShot SD450 & SD550

Man, Canon surely been busy working on new cameras… the SD450 is very interesting… I sold my PowerShot S100 (aka Digital IXUS), might pick up one of these SD450 is the CA (purple fringing) isn’t as bad as the SD400.

Canon PowerShot SD450 & SD550:
Two more additions to the Canon ultra-compact line are the new five megapixel SD450 (IXUS 55) and seven megapixel SD550 (IXUS 750). Both cameras feature a new wide viewing angle 2.5″ LCD monitor, DIGIC II image processor, Lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries and SD card storage. They also have a surprisingly useful new feature which rotates the image in display mode depending on which orientation you are holding the camera. These models will be priced at $399 and $499 respectively.

EOS 5D

So the EOS 5D is real:

$3.3k, that’s quite a bit of change, don’t think this is better than the D2x, which is just a couple of hundred bucks more. Couple points from brief inspection of the specs:

  • more MP is good, especially if you’re like me, who crops more than I probably should, 12.8MP is nice.
  • however, a CR2 RAW at 4368×2912 would probably be about 20MB, and my PowerBook probably can’t handle that kindda file size.
  • it doesn’t support EF-S, and looks like there is no FOV crop, this is great if you do landscape and need the wider focal length, my friend Kevin would love it, his 17-40/4L will really give him the 17mm in the lowest end.
  • sync speed of the 5D is slower than the 20D, 1/200 vs 1/250 of the 20D, probably not a big deal, but I fixed shutter speed at 1/250 when I shoot with my strobes, I guess this, plus the zero FOV crop, will increase DOF.
  • Spot meter is nice, but people who has one in their SLRs usually never used one, I have a Sekonic L-358 incident meter if I need more accurate readings.
  • bigger LCD display is nice, I love the big LCD in the back of Ming’s D2h.
  • Soft-touch shutter is nice, more pro-feel.
  • 3fps sucks, that’s probably why the buffer can hold more images. 17 RAWs vs 6 with the 20D, a crop-mode with more fps like the D2x would be useful.

I guess the 5D bridges the gap between the 20D and the $8k 1DsM2, from the specs it doesn’t look as good as the Nikon D2x. But then of course, if you already have invested in Canon L glasses, you want a pro body to compliment them, and you can’t justify spending $8k for the 1DsM2, then this might be the answer for you.

I think I’ll be keeping my 20D until its replacement comes out.
