Alien Skin Blow Up

A while back I was asked if I wanted to evaluate Alien Skin’s Exposure, I got a copy of the software, installed it and played with it a little bit. It is basically set of PS filters that add effects of different types of film, it is probably useful for a lot of PS users out there, but not me. It runs very slowly on my PowerBook and I can adjust curves, color channels in mixer, add noise, reduce noise, sharpen, etc etc with the tools I already have in PS. I’ve only used it like twice and it’s really not all that useful to me.

When I got into my office this morning there was a DHL package waiting for me from Alien Skins, inside was a copy of Alien Skin Blow Up, it’s like onOne’s Genuine Fractals; it takes an image and upsamples it to much higher resolution (up to 3600% they say) that doesn’t look blurry or pixelated or halo. Now this is very interesting!! There is a comparison chart with other similar solutions in the included materials, looks like Blow Up can handle LAB and Duotone modes and Geniune Fractals cannot. This is not all that useful coz I can always convert to RGB before I want to upsize. What’s more interesting is that it handles 32-bit depth images and layered images, these are definitely huge advantages over Geniune Fractals. I’ll test it out maybe this weekend, if it works as advertised (and the sample images in the included materials look impressive!), then it will definitely be useful when I want to print A0 or poster size prints. I’ve been printing 13×19 at home and even slightly cropped images look fine in that size, but if I go bigger then tools like Blow Up or Geniune Fractals would definitely be useful. Though, a lot of shops that do poster size prints have their own software to help upsampling. I also have a feeling that it is gonna be very slow.

"Next Nikon”

Very interesting…

The popular pro-cam manufacturer is prepping a new DSLR, and has upped a little teaser on their site referring to the “Next Nikon.” Beyond the usual marketing hyperbole of “More power,” “More control,” “More versatile and “More excitement,” Nikon lets slip the megapixel count: 10.2, and the release date: 20 days from now. Word on the street is that the mystery cam will be a replacement to the D70/D70s series, and the 10.2 megapixels will be one welcome improvement from the 6.1 megapixels of the D70.

SD630 actually can view at 1:1 in instant image review

I just read the user manual PDF for the SD630, there are actually some neat features. I found out there are AF Lock, AE Lock, and even FE Lock. Also, in my previous entry I mentioned that I could not view at 1:1 at instant display, I was wrong:

Now I have to check the manual of my 20D to see if it has such feature. 😉 Been using this digicam more these couple of days, it’s ok, especially if you do a little bit of post-processing on the outputs… my friend and fellow photographer Kevin Lu just ordered a Fuji F30 as his new P&S so I will find out how it really performs next week.

The Lenna Story – www.lenna.org

LOL, this page is from CMU’s CS webserver, when I took Prof Chen’s Image and Video Processing class I used this image so many freaking time, at least she was decent looking, here’s the story behind the pic… I never knew the pic was actually a crop from a full body nude pic, would’ve made the class even more interesting… 😉

Fuji F20 and a brief Canon PowerShot SD630 review

I haven’t blogged about this, but I recently picked up a Canon PowerShot SD630 to replace our SD200 as the LCD on it stopped working, I am less than impressed with the SD630. I knew the F30 would be a MUCH better camera in terms of image quality and UI, but it doesn’t look as cute to her… Now this up-coming F20 got all the great stuff on the F30 but is smaller and cuter, IMO… Niiiiiiice!!!!

A few words about the Canon PowerShot SD630… I actually didn’t consider anything else besides another SD-series PowerShot, and I didn’t even look at their sample images. I was very happy with my S100 and the SD200 took pretty decent pictures… so I assumed the SD630 can’t be all bad, WRONG!! Basically the high ISO performance on the SD630 just SUCKS, and by that I mean it’s close to all noise!! In daylight the CA is so bad that you can forget about looking at the images in full res, coz all the highlights will look purple. The Canon P&S UI (and I guess some will argue their D-SLR UI as well), just plain SUCKS. All their PowerShots got this swtich to choose between Preview, Video, and Camera. After you take a picture, the instant preview doesn’t allow zoom (UPDATE: I was wrong about this), and if you’re like me who likes to check the historgrams, and then view the images at 1:1 to check sharpness, you have to flip that switch every single time, which quickly becomes a PITA. Maybe I am spoiled by the noise control on my 20D and the quality of my lenses, but still, both the sensor and the lens plain suck on the SD630. The camera however looks damn good, the 3″ LCD is a nice touch (though image quality on it sucks, just compare it to one of the Sony digicams)…

The SD630 also has no manual control whatsoever, which is ok, but the F30 costs less and got full manual controls. So if anyone is considering getting a new digicam at this price range, go for the F30, or wait for the F20. There is also the SD700 IS, which sports a better lens, but same sensor as the SD630. So maybe at least the CA will be better. The SD700 IS will set you back further by about a hundred bucks, so I’d def go for the Fuji instead. Their superb noise control at high ISO settings will beat the shit of the the IS on the SD700.

LightSource – podcast on studio photography

I just found this podcast via their Flickr group, listened to one of the episodes at the gym, pretty useful information. If you’re interested in learning and improving as a portrait photographer, or if you’re a photographer wanting to listen and learn about lighting techniques, I highly recommend subscribing to it.

How to add Flickr banners onto sites like MySpace and Friendster

So you use Flickr and you built your cool Flickr badge, you’re all ready to show it off at your MySpace profile, only to find out that most of these sites don’t like JavaScript (nor iframes), mainly because whoever created these site didn’t really know what they were doing… Here’s a way to display some of your Flickr pics dynamically at these sites:

  • go to Organizr and tag some pictures with a unique tag, I use “slide.com”
  • if you don’t already have a Slide.com account, get one
  • view your Flickr pics by tags, and click on “slidecom”, (the direct URL will look like http://www.flickr.com/photos/your_name/tags/slidecom/), it should display a list of pics tagged with “slidecom”
  • near the bottom of the the page there should be an RSS feed link, copy the URL
  • go to http://www.slide.com/feed, paste in the URL you just copied
  • It will then generate the code you’d need to display these pics at your MySpace page

So, now when you tag your pics with “slide.com” at Flickr and they will show up at your Slide.com Flash photo banner, obviously, to remove pics just delete the tag. Unfortunately there is not an easy way to batch-remove tags at Flickr at this point.

south bay photography meetup

I’ve been a Meetup member for a long time but I have never been to any of the events until today. I recently joined the south bay photography meetup group and it is actually a very active group. They have at least one event per week. I went to this thing called PhotoSlam 2006, it was a pretty casual knowledge-sharing type event. There were members from the Foothill college photography club, a RangeFinder online message forum, and meetup members. People brought some cool toys, their portfolios, I displayed my portfolio on a projector (the color on the projector was actually calibrated quite well!), and pretty much just socialized and chatted about photography. I was in a hurry and accidentally brought my camera with the macro lens instead of my 24-70/2.8L, so only got some shots of the toys, here are the images:
