Canon Double Rebate is back

New releases like the 400D and the new 50/1.2L don’t qualify. Notice the 30D and 5D got pretty damn good rebate, which I take as a sign that their follow-on’s will be showing up real soon. That 85/1.2L II is tempting. More info here and actual PDF with all rules and restrictions here

Who’s in Charge? You or the Camera?

I’ve observed a tendency for digital photographers to just take what their cameras hand them. Folks put up on-line galleries of their digital photographs for comment, critique, and simple enjoyment, but it’s rare for those photographs to be anything different from what they downloaded from the camera. These folks are unconsciously operating much the same way slide film photographers did (more correctly, were forced to). Unless they are intentionally trying to present the world entirely as the camera saw it, this is a profound artistic mistake.

The Online Photographer: October 2006

Ctein raised a very good point, I almost never do a straight RAW to jpeg conversion and then share my pics, I at least adjust the raw converter settings, adjust the curve, some slight USM, USM after downsizing, and for pics with people in them I do some very minor touchups. And these steps are for snapshots only. I spend a lot of time in post-processing when I do more serious photoshoots. It bothers me when I see people with fancy gears on Flickr posting very mediocre straight-from-camera images, some of these are so bad that they wouldn’t even be kept on my memory card after instant preview. And most of these guys shoot JPEGs, which is completely insane now when memory cards are so cheap. I am not encouraging people to overprocess your images, but at least do enough to get more out of the captured frames.

Alien Bee ring flash – ABR800

Just listened to an episode of the LightSource podcast, Paul C. Buff of Alien Bees and White Lighting was on it. He talked about some upcoming products, pretty interesting stuff, there is gonna be a ring flash called the ABR800 (specs). It will have a modeling light, and it will be self-contained, about 8″ in diameter, light weight (~2.25lb). Also check StudioLighting’s review on the ABR800.

From these pics it looks pretty damn huge though…

EOS 400D

I like the sensor and the dust cleaning thing. I like the new 50/1.2L also!! It will make a badass portrait lens for the 1.6CF bodies. I think I’m still gonna hold out for a full frame body and the 85/1.2L though.

Here’s a quick glimpse at what’s new in the Rebel XTi/400D, relative to the camera it replaces:

  • It produces 10.08 million pixel photos from a 22.2mm x 14.8mm CMOS sensor
  • The sensor cover glass includes a piezoelectric device designed to apply dust-clearing ultrasonic vibration during camera startup, shutdown or manually at anytime
  • The camera can create a map of any stubborn guck not removed by the sensor’s self-cleaning action and embed that into JPEG or CR2 metadata. Digital Photo Professional v2.2 will be able to apply the dust map for one-step removal of unwelcome dust blobs from pictures
  • Rebel XTi/400D autofocus is the same 9-point system used in the EOS 30D (and EOS 20D before that)
  • The twin LCD displays of the Rebel XT/350D have been replaced in the Rebel XTi/400D by a single 2.5 inch (diagonal), 230,000 pixel, 160 degree viewing angle TFT rear LCD
  • A sensor beneath the viewfinder eyepiece detects when the camera is brought to your eye and shuts off the rear LCD automatically (the lone rear LCD is the entry-point for almost all basic settings except exposure mode)
  • Burst depth is a Canon-specified 27 Large Fine JPEG and 10 RAW CR2 frames
  • The Rebel XTi/400D is the latest Canon digital SLR to incorporate a Picture Style menu for extensive control over colour, contrast and sharpening, including the ability to turn off sharpening of in-camera JPEGs entirely
  • The camera offers an extended range of printing controls when linked to a compatible Canon photo printer

Sherry’s gallery migrated to Flickr as well

Sherry finally got herself a Flickr “pro” subscription so I just helped migrated her snapshots from gallery to flickr, using my hacked version of gallery2flickr. It still works, so if anyone’s interested in ditching Gallery (1) for Flickr, check out the hack.

I also found a really nifty tool to backup your Flickr pics to your Mac.
