700p EVDO Speed USB vs BT

Just got Bluetooth tethering working with USBModem, pretty decent speed:

Bluetooth:

  • Download Speed: 319 kbps (39.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
  • Upload Speed: 49 kbps (6.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

USB:

  • Download Speed: 594 kbps (74.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
  • Upload Speed: 115 kbps (14.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

EVDO over Bluetooth is slower but still gives pretty good speed, but using USB also charges the phone, my PowerBook is pretty big so carrying the extra USB cable isn’t a big deal. Now at least I can get online during my Caltrain rides… 😉

A.P.C. new stuff dropping soon!!!!

A.P.C. is def one of my favorite clothing companies, I’ve been working on a pair of their New Standards for 4 months now, they’re freakin awesome… Sherry just copped a pair of (fairly) skinny jeans from Diesel, they are not selvage though. I think the cut is called the Liv, the wash is undistressed – not raw but close to it, feel kindda like the 3-wash selvage RB6… They look dope, next pair for her is gonna be some super skinny jeans from APC…

I’m def gonna cop the military style jacket from APC when it gets colder, I tried it on at Nom de Guerre and it was a very nice fit… 😉 I’m still pissed that I didn’t get to their sale early enough, they had it for half price!!!

skype in OS X and threads

Just noticed that Skype on my Mac, even when it is idle, uses around 2% CPU and has THIRTEEN threads!! iTunes streaming apple lossless music via AirTunes also has 13 of them. I wonder why Skype needs so many threads, maybe coz my client is used as an intermediate node serving like 12 other users… heh…

"Next Nikon”

Very interesting…

The popular pro-cam manufacturer is prepping a new DSLR, and has upped a little teaser on their site referring to the “Next Nikon.” Beyond the usual marketing hyperbole of “More power,” “More control,” “More versatile and “More excitement,” Nikon lets slip the megapixel count: 10.2, and the release date: 20 days from now. Word on the street is that the mystery cam will be a replacement to the D70/D70s series, and the 10.2 megapixels will be one welcome improvement from the 6.1 megapixels of the D70.

EVDO speed

Tethered my Treo 700p with USB to my Powerbook using Mobile Stream’s USB Modem:

  • Download Speed: 471 kbps (58.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
  • Upload Speed: 114 kbps (14.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

I performed several speed tests with the web browser on the Treo and got some really terrible speed, I guess that browser sucks, I also noticed the EVDO connection dropping in the middle of the test (went from green arrows to grey ones), that probably affected the results also.

I couldn’t get USB Modem to work over Bluetooth, sent an email to their support address about it, hopefully they will write back tomorrow.

do you know the make and model of your cellie?

This is scary coz not only do I know the models of all the eight phones I’ve had, I also know the makes and models what most of my friends and family use… to the point like the v3c is different than v3m and stuff… LOL! and I don’t even hang out on HoFo all that much; I only go there when I switch phones…

We can understand your phone’s model name slipping your mind. Heck, we’ve even confused the occasional Nokia 6680 with a 6682. In a study commissioned by consulting group LogicaCMG, British research firm Ipsos MORI has found that 49% of surveyed users feel the pain, unable to recall their phone’s model on command. More frightening, though, is that full 9% of folks don’t know the model or make of their piece.

MP3/AAC ringtones for Treo 700p via iTunes and Bluetooth

The Treo 700p supports AAC natively for some odd reasons (it doesn’t support MP3 out of the box, IIRC), it’s great coz I’m a Mac user and I use iTunes for my lossless library, so converting to AAC is a piece of cake. These steps should be similar if you use iTunes on a Windows machine.

First of all, you need to download this hack for the SoundsApp to get it to recognize the .aac extension, and then either copy it to your SD card and launch it in LauncherX, or you can try to send it via Bluetooth…. Do a soft reset on the Treo. Then in iTunes go into Preferences->Advanced->Importing, select AAC Encoder, settings choose Custom, with bit rate of 96kbps, Auto sample rate, and Mono channels. Check the VBR checkbox.

In your iTunes library, select the track (in Apple Lossless, MP3, or AAC, doesn’t matter), and right-click on the track, and do “convert track to AAC“, it should be pretty quick. After that you will find the track in your iTunes music library folder. drag it somewhere, rename the extension to .aac, send the file over Bluetooth to your Treo and it should add it as a ringtone. Pretty straightforward. This is assuming that you had already paired your Treo with your computer.
