Web 2.0 Hits The Half Billion Investment Run Rate

The San Jose Mercury News had an article this past weekend with the latest VentureOne numbers. Apparently $260 milllion was invested in “web 2.0” companies in the first half of 2006, which means that the run rate for the year is $500 million. It’s not clear to me how they define “web 2.0” but then it’s never clear how anyone defines “web 2.0”.

Finally found a place to live…

I haven’t blogged about this, but my landlords are getting married and they wanted to move into the condo themselves. So I had to find a new place. Initially I wanted to move to Mountain View – something within walking/skating distance to Castro Street / Caltrain / Light Rail. I subscribed to like 8 search feeds at Craigslist and looked at about a dozen places all over the map and from like 1.2k to 3.3k a month. 😆

Ironically, I ended up just moving to the condo right above my current one. Basically I looked at quite a lot of places and I had a matrix to grade them, and this place is actually pretty ideal, with the exception that it is not within walking distance to a Caltrain station, nor a bar that is open til 2. But then the drive up to SF isn’t bad, and Sherry lives in the middle of a ton of bars and pubs so no problem. I posted to the residents Yahoo! group and got a few replies almost right away, and turns out the guy who lives right above us is moving out so I’ll just move into it. 🙂 It is on the top floor, so the living room has vaulted ceiling and extra windows, the ceiling is pretty damn high, I’m not exactly sure how many feet, my guess is around 20 something… It would be much better for setting up my strobes. Right now the modifiers almost touch the ceiling when I do photoshoots.

I used Google Spreadsheet to compare places, it totally sucks btw. Here are the items I care about, if you care to read them…

  • pet-friendly
  • # bedrooms and bathrooms
  • move-in timeframe
  • privately owned vs apartment management company
  • garage (attached?)
  • washer/dryer in unit
  • fitness center (and if it’s got free weights, and if so, how much? a lot of them only go up to 50lb which is a complete joke)
  • pool (heated all year?)
  • closet space, walk-in closet?
  • neighborhood (crime, how it looks, if it’s close to restaurants, bars, grocery store, dry cleaner, etc etc)
  • distance to office
  • distance to caltrain
  • amount of storage room
  • icemaker in freezer?
  • loft-style? I’m kindda a sucker for lofts, especially multi-level spaces
  • rent

In my search I kindda liked this new apartment community right next to SCU called Domicilio, it probably would be awesome for singles coz there is a school across the street from it. 😉 It is also 0.3 miles away from a Caltrain station. I also liked Avalon at Cahill Park, it’s very close to the big San Jose Caltrain station (almost all trains stop there, including the bullets and baby-bullets), and they have some 1BR lofts that are quite nice. But I didn’t like how they jacked up the prices over the phone to lure me into signing a lease immediately, bad bad tactic. 🙂

Mapquest > GMaps

MapQuest was able to get me directions from my office to downtown San Jose without using any highways, kick ass!! Google is still working on that, LOL… With the new draggable/AJAX map at MapQuest maybe I’ll move back to it…

I would like to avoid highways when getting driving directions. Is this possible? We realize that having the ability to choose an alternate route when getting driving directions would be useful. Please note that we’re looking into ways of providing this feature soon.We appreciate your patience as we continue to work on improving Google Maps.

Finally, a denim store in SF worth spending my money at

Got this in my inbox today:

hey andrew, i just read your review for the Blue Jeans Bar in sf and wanted to let you know that i’m opening Self Edge in san francisco next month. i think you’ll be into it.

🙂

www.selfedge.com

Looks like the same fine folks behind TurfSM will be opening a denim store in SF this November, from their website I saw Iron Heart, Sugar Cane, Samurai, and Nudies… Would be nice to have PBJ and Oni too, but that’s a great stock list to start with!! It’s located at a nice area too, close to Ritual Coffee and Shoe Biz and stuff… oh btw, Ritual has some crazy fast wifi, maybe coz they’re on speakeasy.net, but I went to speakeasy’s speed test and got some insanely high speed when I was there last time… 😉

Didn’t know this about the Lambo’s…

One great feature the Diablo VT has is a switch on the dashboard which raises the car enabling you to go over speed humps without grounding out. When you reach 20mph the car automatically goes back down again.

Whenever I drove through places that my cars had a hard to clearing without scratching the bottom, I wondered how I would do it in an exotic like a Ferrari or Lambo… I seriously did not know they got such feature in a Diablo, very cool… LOL!

New AMEX Gold benefits start Oct 1

I was checking my fatwallet feed and found discussion on benefits changes for Amex gold… Looks like they are no longer differentiating between Membership Rewards and Membership Rewards Options, which is great coz it was confusing as hell… Not exactly sure after Oct 1 what the differences would be between the Preferred Rewards and the Rewards Plus, besides the 5 free (not really free, more like included) additional cards.

Roadside Assistance is nice to have for me, I’m used to having it but the EVO doesn’t come with it.

Bonus Points Mall ? starting October 1
Roadside Assistance Anywhere ? starting October 1
The Event Ticket Protection Plan1 ? starting October 1

Blue In Green online store is up!

AWESOME! They even offer chainstitching!! That’s dope! Maybe afterall I won’t have to go to Tokyo the next time I need jeans. I think I can start a new pair next March, thinking about either the 19CM or the PBJ xx-005, leaning toward the PBJ.

They need to put up some reference for sizing, like relative sizing to other brands (APC is a good reference). Also need information on shrinkage, whether they need a cold-soak, sanforized or not, etc etc… Otherwise, they are looking at a shit load of returns and exchanges…

AMEX Depature mag article: Where’s the Logo?

Simon Doonan, the debonair creative director of Barneys New York, believes most of us rather like the idea of having something few others have?and that fewer still even realize we have it. “Ultimately those embellishments become markers of prestige,” he explains. “It’s subtler than putting a logo on, but in the end it’s the same. People respond to them because there is a certain knowingness in wearing them. It implies, ‘I’m a connoisseur about my purchases because I’ve recognized this detail.'”

Very true, most of the stuff I wear or use is pretty obscure and very few people around me would notice, but when I run into somebody who does notice, it’s cool… Like a few of the people in line at Recon when the Alcatraz dunks dropped noticed the Spruce and a few even asked where the heck I got it from…

protectors for new ipods

BestSkinEver already got theirs for sale, while Invisible Shield only got their 2G Nano skins on pre-order (but holy shit, IS is so much more expensive than BSE!!), Martin Fields got theirs on pre-order, Boxwave is lagging behind, nowhere to be found at their site. Brando Workshop also doesn’t have protectors for the new pods listed yet.

I’m not sure about wrapping the sexy alum finish of the 2G Nano’s with clear skin though, I’d just rock it with a MF screen protector if I had one.

IS has different part numbers for the 60GB and 80GB 5g iPods, but BSE got the same part number… hmmm…
