more on CS3 and unviersal binary
I was reading the discussions on the CS3 post at AppleInsider, I was gonna reply but forum user Chucker posted exactly what I would’ve said… Ming just picked up a MacBook Pro and he’s been running CS2 on it, emulating PPC binaries, and he said it is not slow at all.
Public beta of Adobe Creative Suite 3 may boost Mac sales – AppleInsider
- Anyone with half a clue easily saw the writing on the wall that CodeWarrior was going away, especially when Motorola didn’t even put any effort into PPC970 support.
- Apple had been recommending people to move to Xcode Tools for many, many years.
- It is perfectly possible to compile a Universal Binary without Xcode. All you need is lipo, which Xcode calls into anyway, and two compilers (duh).

digital_denim’s Samurai contest denim pics
SuperFuture has a denim contest in which 30 people from all over the world started rocking a pair of limited edition Samurai S0500XX on November 1st, 2006. In a year they will compare results and there will be an open voting on who got the dopest wear. The winner will get a free pair Samurai.
The contest denims are super nice, very stubby, thick and heavy, and they’re made with special Texas cotton. The jeans in the contest are a special batch, but Samurai also made them for general distribution. I tried them on at Self Edge and they were awesome… 2000dB is getting a website up and running, it will have blogs and pics and stuff, there is also a thread on SuperFuture with pics and updates.
digital_denim, contestant #2 from San Francisco, gave me his contest jeans for a proper photoshoot. These got about 1 month of wear on them. I tried my best to capture the wear and the details of the jeans… The following is an embedded slideshow of the pics. (If you are looking at this in an RSS reader, most likely you will have to view this post in a web browser to see this slideshow). Enjoy!

GReader shared items
If you’ve read this blog for a while you might notice I haven’t been posting stuff from other sites/blogs on here as often, this is because I’ve switched to using Google Reader and I’ve been sharing links with the sharing feature in Google Reader. Until FeedBurner adds the capability to burn GReader shares into my main RSS feed, you can look at my GReader shares here, and there is a feed for the shared items here. For those who still comes here with a web browser, there is a “clip” on my shared items on the left sidebar as well, below the categories…
my condolescenes to the Kim family
This is truly sad news for the tech community… RIP, James…
12/6/06 – 1:15pm – The authorities have confirmed that James Kim was found. They have reported he did not make it.
The friends and family respectfully request that the media refrain from contact during this time to allow us time to be together as friends and family in peace.A statement for the media –
“The friends and community of the Kim family are deeply saddened by the news received today about James Kim. We want to send out our utmost thanks to the Search and Rescue teams who risked their lives in the efforts to bring James back to us, they are true heroes to risk their own lives for a stranger. As friends we know that we did everything we could to help in the search for the Kim family, which is our only comfort now. We thank the Oregon authorities, the media, and everyone who sent us their thoughts and prayers for their support through this very difficult time. Please continue to keep Kati, Penelope, Sabine and the rest of their family in your thoughts.”

more on iPhone
Nice, a CDMA one for me please…
AppleInsider | Digg founder spills beans on Apple iPhone?
In the latest episode of his weekly podcast, Digg founder Kevin Rose claims some knowledge of Apple Computer’s initial iPhone product.
According to Rose, the extremely compact device will work with both CDMA and GSM networks, making it compatible with all of the most popular wireless carriers, such as Verizon, Sprint, Cingular and T-Mobile.
Apple is also doing “some unique things” with the device, he said, like building in two separate batteries — one for the music player portion and the other for the actual phone.
Rose, who has provided accurate information on Apple products in the past, added that Apple is likely to introduce two models of the phone: a $249 4GB model and a $449 8GB model.
It should be noted that his past predictions on Apple products have come within hours, not months, of the formal introduction for those products.
Still, Rose appeared high in his convictions, even adding that a touch-screen may also be in the cards for the face of the device.
A copy of this week’s Diggnation podcast is available here.

VCAT (Venture Capital Aptitude Test)
I haven’t really been reading up on my subscribed feeds that were tagged “VC” for a long time, and this is pretty much why… Instead of getting an MBA or JD/MBA and then try to break into VC, I’m probably better off using that money to do my own shit and see what comes out of it…
How to Change the World: The Venture Capital Aptitude Test (VCAT)
Venture capital is something to do at the end of your career, not the beginning. It should be your last job, not your first.
My theory is that when you?re young, you should work eighty hours a week to create a product or service that changes the world. You should not sit in board meetings listening to an entrepreneur explaining why she missed her numbers while you read email on a Blackberry and intermittently spew forth gems like, ?You should partner with MySpace; I can also introduce you to a few of the losers in our portfolio.?
Furthermore, entrepreneurs should view any young person who opted for venture capital over ?real world? experience with contempt. Why would you want advice from someone whose background consists of working in a college bookstore or cranking spreadsheets at an investment bank? Financial models are almost totally irrelevant because there?s no financial wizardry involved in making a good product and selling the heck out of it.
…
The three worst backgrounds for a venture capitalist are management consulting, investment banking, and accounting. Management consulting is bad because it leads you to believe that implementation is easy and insights are hard when the opposite is true in startups. Investment banking is bad because it leads you to believe that everything can be reduced to cells on a spreadsheet and that companies should be built for Wall Street, not customers. Moreover, investment bankers are oriented towards doing deals, not building companies. Accounting is bad because it leads you to believe that history not only repeats itself, it predicts the future.
Finally, there is the issue of the pertinence of an MBA to venture capital. The upside is that such a degree can provide additional tools and knowledge (such as calculating that 25% of $1.6 billion is $400 million) to help you make investment decisions and to assist entrepreneurs. The downside is that earning this degree (and I have one) causes most people to develop the hollow arrogance of someone who?s never been tested. All told, the downside of an MBA outweighs the upside.

Apple to ship 300,000 MacBooks this month
After looking at the specs and the prices, especially the prices on Amazon on Black Friday, and playing with the real thing at the SF Apple Store, it was hard not to buy one. They should sell like hot cakes this holiday season…
I plan to blog about my initial experience and impression on Sherry’s new MacBook, so stay tuned…
