Haven’t run at all last week coz I wasn’t feel well, it’s got way too cold in the bay area lately… To motivate myself to run more the rest of this month I’ve made a “resolution” at Nike+, here’s the tracking widget… 🙂 as you can see I am WAY WAY behind!!

post id’s
Looks like I just passed post id 1000 with my Sugarcane Okinawa post (http://blog.andrewng.com/archives/1000)!! I don’t think that actually means I’ve written a thousand entries here, like if I delete an entry it takes up a post id, but I guess I am very close to it. 🙂
Sugarcane Union Star
I am going to quote Blue in Green’s website on these jeans:
The newest addition to the Sugar Cane denim lineup is the Union Star Jean. In July of 1965 Toyo Enterprise, parent company of Sugar Cane, was commisioned to make a limited run of jeans for the U.S. Military PX. At that time Toyo Enterprise had been producing Aloha shirts for the PX but this order marked Toyo’s first entry into the the production of denim jeans. In recognition of this event in Toyo’s history Sugar Cane has released the Union Star Jeans. The denim is that of 100% Double ring-spun Zimbabwe cotton and includes details such as iron-made buttons, deer leather patch, and redline selvage.
The fit is very relaxed, I think it’s cool, but definitely not something I’m used to. For some odd reason the area like 2 inches below the waist felt extremely tight, like the part right above my ass was very comfortable when these on. Maybe I would have to size up even more to a 31″.
They are available now at Self Edge in San Francisco and I think at BiG in NYC also.

Sugarcane Okinawas
Also managed to take some pics for my own use of a pair of VERY DOPE Sugarcane Okinawa One-Wash. They were really really nice, great cut and fit, pretty slubby denim, and amazing details, check out the macro pics!
They are available now at Self Edge in San Francisco and BiG in NYC.
Showing a little bit of pocket selvage, not as flashy as Samurai’s, nice and subtle

the inside pockets are insane!! Look at the pattern!!

How Imperial Dukes and Kings look like
If you wonder how Imperial denims fit like, here are some pictures I was able to snap of myself in all 4 variations of colors and styles. Notice these were brand new raw jeans so they should look significantly more fitted and just look better in general after maybe 2 weeks of wear. 🙂 btw a TON of thanks to Richard T. of Yelp for the help in assisting me with these pics, having him here to help take these was FAR better than doing it all by myself using the timer.

Going to the Mattresses
I always wonder and have pretty much concluded that, with a few exception obviously, the whole mattress business is all terrible marketing and it’s pretty much run like a giant scam… When I shopped for a mattress set last time, all the stores had some kindda price-match guarantee, some even over 100%, but then all the mattresses are kindda specifically made for a particular store, with completely different names and designations, so there is really no easy way to compare… I am pretty sure I got raped buying my mattress… I brought Sherry to Mattress Discounter and I think she got a decent deal, like she paid 300 bucks for just the mattress (no box spring, she later got that from the free stuff section of Craigslist), but the key was that we purchased at Santa Clara and they were able to deliver it to North Beach, (I know they have stores in SF too), but they even moved it up 2 stories of stairs, and she got a frame threw in (I think)… So it was okay… I on the other hand probably paid more than I should’ve, but then with a good-size “relocation” package from my employer I didn’t really bother shopping around for it… back then I was more worried about finding a place to live, hehe…
Interesting article to read for sure…
Going to the Mattresses – By Seth Stevenson – Slate Magazine
First, I walk into a mattress store and ask what’s on sale. Then, I throw my hands in the air and shout along with the salesman, “EVERYTHING’S ON SALE!!!!” Oh how we laugh, the salesman and I. And while he’s still chuckling, I turn around and walk out, because I fricking hate mattress salesmen.
Is there a more maddening industry? They confuse us with silly product names (the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Fletcher Ultra Plush Pillowtop or the Sealy Posturepedic Crown Jewel Brookmere Plush?). They flummox us with bogus science (“pocketed coils”? “Microtek foundations”? “Fiberlux”?). And they weigh us down with useless features (silk damask ticking?). It’s like buying a used car, and almost as expensive?I’ve seen mattresses going for $7,000. What’s a consumer to do?
The secret to mattress shopping is that the product is basically a commodity. The mattress biz is 99-percent marketing. So just buy the cheapest thing you can stand and be done with it, because they’re pretty much all the same. And that’s all you need to know. But do read on?the world of sleep products is quite fascinating, and I’d like to share it with you.

alumni event at the Googleplex
Just got back from the alumni event at Google, it was alright, not too exciting, and not too lame either… I actually met some people I haven’t seen since I graduated, so that part was cool… Also got to talk to some current students and picked up a few resumes and cards. What is up with the security at that place though, it was terrible, I felt like I was in a prison or something… I still managed to snap some pics with my Treo…
Here SCS Dean Randall Brant was giving us an update on the recent constructions and developments at the school:
The new (to me at least) CoLab:
upcoming constructions to get rid of the old student center and the parking lot and random buildings behind Wean:
In the bathrooms at Google they had some unit testing programming brain teaser, no I didn’t bother reading it, heh…
Looks like some peeps live there:
break room area and pool table (not pictured), I might get into troubles by posting this coz the very nice security dudes did not like what I was doing…
Oh yeah, somehow I won a 5.5g 30gb black iPod! heh, best use of a business card ever! Obviously, I have a 60gb and a Nano already so this is going straight to Craigslist and if it doesn’t sell there, eBay… you’re welcome to make me an offer, I’m thinking maybe ~200 bucks? It’s BNIB and super awesome yo! (UPDATE: it’s been sold, CL rocks!)

well, iPhone is disappointing
It’s crazy how many IMs/emails and people stopped by my office and went “you seen the iPhone?”, of course I have, that is just a f’king stupid question… It actually has most of the features I wanted, with the exception of corporate emails and OTA PIM sync with corporate accounts (like Exchange) and high speed wireless connection like HSDPA or EvDO…
From what I heard Cingular still sucks (and believe me, I really really wish this isn’t the case!), those who likes it prolly live in metropolitan areas with lots of towers and never gets out of it, I’d like to be able to make an emergency phone call if I get stuck on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere…
Exclusive contract and shit, looks like I will be waiting for like the 3rd gen iPhone that works with Verizon… If Apple’s previous new products were any indication, this thing is gonna be buggy as hell…

Laura Compton got some people mixed up
That was NOT me who said those things, I wasn’t wearing Earnest Sewn and that wasn’t me in the picture. 🙂 And I don’t have the RRL’s…
Also, Damon was NOT wearing RRL’s either! He was rocking a pair of black PBJ-005’s.
UPDATE: exchanged a few emails with Laura and she fixed the errors in the article, thanks Laura!
SFGate: Culture Blog! : Show us your jeans
Andrew Ng (below) was wearing Earnest Sewn (“they’re pretty good with the predistressed”), although he, too, has the Ralph Lauren style, picked up for the bargain price of $60. “In the past year, I’ve bought six pairs of different jeans — black, gray, etc. I try to make them all different. Half of them are dry, half of them are washed.”
