24 hours of flickr

Those 365 days projects are way too much work and IMO pretty boring, but this sounds kindda cool. Flickr is encouraging its users to chronicle their day with photos on Sat 5/5/07. I’ll probably do it, just joined the group. Sounds like I have to pick only one photo for submission.

Flickr: 24 hours of Flickr

It’s coming! 24 Hours of Flickr: A global Flickr community event What happens around the world in one day? In a word ? life. Here on Flickr, our members are sharing the world that they see: snapping daily moments, recording history, telling stories, capturing beauty. To celebrate this global community, we invite you to join us in 24 Hours of Flickr, a day-long global photo project. On May 5 2007, grab your camera and whatever else you need, and chronicle your day in pictures. Join the 24 Hours of Flickr group to get ready for the big day. After the big day, post your best photo to the group. We’d love to see the group photos on a map as well, so make sure you add your photos to the map using the Organizr. Remember! We want the photos here to illustrate one day in the life of the Flickr community ? May 5, 2007 ? so, you can only submit a photo taken on May 5. (You’ll have until May 21 to add your photo.) The event will be commemorated by a companion 24 Hours of Flickr book, which will contain a selection of photographs chosen from the group. Additionally, the group’s photos will be featured at Flickr events around the world this summer. By adding your photo to this group, you understand that it may be selected for publication in the 24 Hours of Flickr commemorative book and/or displayed at a Flickr-sponsored event this summer.

Tripod and head recommendation

My friend seoulfully is looking for a tripod for his new dSLR, so I asked around and looked at various different sites for prices and reviews, narrowed down to the following:

Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod: this thing is pretty cool, go to Manfrotto’s 190x website to check out the video, it’s like tripod pr0n… it’s not carbon fiber, but it’s pretty inexpensive.

Manfrotto 322RC2: grip action ball head is the way to go, this one is great because the center of mass is relatively low, this is important for macro photography coz you definitely do not want the camera to move around easily when you’re shooting at 1:1.

Both of them are eligible for Amazon Prime! 🙂 B&H also sells them as a kit, I think it will end up costing about the same with shipping.

If I were to upgrade my tripod setup I would probably get the same head, but go for carbon fiber legs. I’m still not sure if the 190MF3 or 190MF4 has the same center column that can tilt and switch between landscape and portrait orientations easily. and obviously Gitzo makes damn nice tripods, but they’re not cheap…

IRS cashes checks REALLY fast!

So I kindda messed up doing my taxes this year and had to amend my fed and state returns (again!), it’s a long story and I don’t really want to blog about it to bore you. But in the end I sent out my 1040X with a check to the 1040X address in Fresno, CA, this Monday, and I just checked my bank’s website and it was cashed today already! They probably received my forms and checks this Tuesday, and my online bank is in Wiscosin, so they must’ve cashed it like on Tuesday to get cleared today. That’s pretty damn impressive considering how much mails they must’ve received! Hopefully my CA state amended return refund comes back quickly too like last year’s did. 🙂

Want invites for The Fashion Spot?

The Fashion Spot‘s forum membership became invitational-only a while back, but I just got a ton of invites. If you’re interested in one please leave a comment to tell me a bit about yourself, and why you would want to participate at tFS and how you would contribute, also include your email address in the form. (tFS mods wanted me to make sure I invite quality people)…

Dock Dodger, Brilliant!

I use quicksilver to launch things exclusively and the Dock is pretty much useless, I hate it that the running apps have to show their icons in the Dock without having to manually edit the app package. Now this does it for you easily, brilliant!

FoggyNoggin Software :: Dock Dodger

Sometimes, you find an application that you really, really like, but when you run it, the icon takes up valuable space in your Dock. With Dock Dodger, you can rid almost any application of its Dock icon, giving you your Dock back.

With Dock Doger, removing the Dock icon is as easy as Drag and Drop. Simply drag in the application you want to Un-Dock and Dock Dodger takes care of the rest. When you re-launch that application, it will be sans Dock icon. Want the Dock icon back? Just re-drag the application into Dock Dodger and everything’s back to normal.

Verizon EVDO confirmed to be capped at 5GB / month

So if you have an EVDO data plan with VZW, here’s another way to get out of your Verizon contract – go over 5GB / month bandwidth limit. I use my EVDO a lot, my email is on about 18 hours a day (IMAP over SSL). I send a lot of full-res photos via pix messaging or via e-mail to Flickr, I also do other things with my EVDO that I probably shouldn’t talk about here. I used the EVDO service heavily last weekend in SF and I just checked my usage and I used about 200MB for that weekend, so that’s about 100MB per day, so I think 5GB is actually pretty decent even if I use it as my only Internet connection outside of work and free WiFi hotspots. However using the word “unlimited” was IMO false advertising.

Verizon finally copped to capping the connection at 5GB of transfer per month. While before they used to advertise that you could have “unlimited” access, what they really meant was that you could check your email and do basic surfing, but otherwise you’d be breaking their terms of service. I guess they’ve finally decided to be a little more honest in their advertising, so it looks like “unlimited” is no longer a menu option.

Gorillapod for cheap ($17) at Amazon

This thing is great for taking WAYWT (what are you wearing today?) pictures with your digital point-and-shoot cameras… I went to my Amazon front page and it was recommended to me, I didn’t know they’re so cheap there, not bad for 17 bucks… I have no use for this coz my setup is way too heavy and I already have a tripod (well there is actually a DSLR version too), but if you need one, here’s a link to order it… 🙂

No, I’m not on this and I do not have any invite, just thought this was an interesting concept… Sorry.

You are interested in someone, say a lovely lady from New York, you start the flirting process by basically bidding some of your 500 points on her, say 50 points. The bid indicates your intent to woo the young lady. Unfortunately for you, if you?ve made a wise choice, there will be others who will want to date her as well. They will try to outbid you and, well, the process goes on, till the young lady is convinced that you are the one to reward with her attentions. You get SMS and MMS alerts all through the bidding process.Since the service is in closed beta, you are not penalized for being a loser, but when the service launches, be careful what you bid for.If you happen to lose, you are not just out of luck with the lady, but out of those points, too. In the future you lose a percentage of your bid amount. The percentage may be quite large, to discourage too much ?reaching? on the part of guys who can?t reasonably get the girl. This is why you need to be economical about how you bid your points, and judicious in indicating your intent. (Not so different from the triage we men use when doling out dollars in singles a bar, either.) And if you come up empty, don?t take it personally. As François de la Rochefoucauld put it – ?What we find the least of in flirtation is love.? (You aren?t looking for love anyway, remember?)
