Pocketfactory: Review: PalmOne LifeDrive, Part One

Pocketfactory: Review: PalmOne LifeDrive

This guy is right on:

So why place this product into its own unique category? Two reasons, simply:

A. Marketing spin. This is a great new product that has features not found on any competing product on the market today. So, why not flaunt that fact in the face of consumers and corporate customers by positioning LifeDrive as something other than a handheld, even though it?s really not. Placing it in the same category with Tungstens and Zires would give the subconscious (and unfair) impression that it?s just another handheld.

B. Declining PDA sales. With ?traditional? (read: disconnected) PDA sales declining, PalmOne wants to do whatever it takes not to associate this product with a declining product segment. And what better way to do that than to NOT call it PDA?

Giving LifeDrive a category space all its own allows PalmOne to dodge two bullets at the same time, and perhaps give this product a chance to experience real success and acceptance in the market place. Will that strategy pay off? Time will tell.

I agree that something like the LifeDrive in the Treo form factor would be a killer, I for one want more internal memory (like 4GB is about right!! and more RAM!!) for my Treo, faster processor, etc etc…

What LifeDrive is not

Those of you who were expecting LifeDrive to be some miracle multimedia wonder device or iPod killer are in for a disappointment. Whatever this product?s intended purpose, it most certainly is not in the same class with iPods or Portable Media Center devices, and is in no way marketed as such. It lacks the software and capabilities to fill that role, and I see no indication PalmOne ever intended LifeDrive for that purpose, other than to enable the user to take some of their content with them on the go. It replaces your PDA, not your iPod. In fact, it?s more accurate to say that, if anything, LifeDrive competes with Laptops more than any other type of device.

Random thoughts
Personally, I feel that PalmOne should have integrated this wonderful technology into a new Smartphone product rather than a traditional PDA. Combining massive storage and on the go content access with Treo?s Smartphone savvy would make for a killer combination.

How sinful am I?

Saw this at Trevor’s blog, so went and got my results… LOL!

What do you guys think of this?

It doesn’t work with iTunes so it won’t kill the iPod. You can store office documents on the HDD, but it doesn’t have anything like M$ Office, so it probably won’t work as well as the (god forbid) PocketPC handhelds… It doesn’t have a phone function so it’s not as useful as the Treo… I doubt the picture viewer can handle different types of RAW files so it won’t work as a picture dump like the Epson P-2000. It also lacks a CF card slot, most prosumer or D-SLR’s still use CF cards.

Good for students? Well, not sure about all schools, but at Carnegie Mellon or MIT all students had AFS access so there was really no need to carry any data around, I’m sure most schools provide students with at least some kindda web storage so they can put up their personal webpages… and there is always Gmail for cheap free mass storage…

I guess it’s sorta a jack-of-all-trade attempt for Palm, I can’t say it isn’t a good idea… Everything kindda make sense, but I still would prefer an iPod, mainly because of iTunes (and Apple Lossless), and a Treo 650. It’s just because I don’t think I would carry an extra PDA with me at all times, but if it’s my cellphone I would. And a mini keyboard is far better than Graffiti, I’ve been a Palm user for 5 years so I know my Graffiti (and Graffiti shortcuts!!) pretty darn well, but I can basically do everything with the 5-way navigator and the keyboard on my Treo 650 without ever removing the stylus.

I guess if I were in the market for a PDA it might appeal to me, for $100 more than the T5 I get a 4GB HDD, more included apps (still no VPN app included!!), WiFi and Bluetooth built-in so I can use the expansion slot for something else.

This might help fix my friend’s prejudice on clamshell phones

Stubborn friend of mine asserted that clamshell phone will never be reliable base on a single bad experience he’s had… I’ve had quite a few clamshells that worked perfect after years of serious use… I couldn’t find a clamshell stess test at the LG website, but a brief Google search found me this picture…

Amazon is awesome

So I ordered a few books for work, they came in 3 different shipments, and one of them (the shipment that contained Head First Design Pattern and XSLT and XPath On The Edge, Unlimited Edition) apparently got lost. It was sent via USPS and tracking info indicates that it was delivered last Thursday at my office, but nobody at my office has seen the package.

So I contacted Amazon with their online contact form and got a reply in a couple of hours:

Subject: Your Amazon.com Order (#xxxxxxxxx)
From: “Amazon.com Customer Service”
To: ayn
I am sorry that you have not received this order; it appears the package may be lost. Please accept our sincere apologies for this inconvenience.

I have placed a new order for the items. There will be no charge for this replacement. Here are the details of the new order……

Pretty good! I should really join Amazon Prime so my free-shipping items will be delivered via Fedex instead of USPS, they’re much more reliable when shipping to a business address.

Finally got Bluetooth sync to work in Windows

So I installed the 3COM drivers and software for my 3CRWB6096B Bluetooth PC card last week, setup the virtual ports, but HotSync never showed those COM ports in the pull-down menu.

I was trying to get Internet Sharing to work, after much research and about 15 minutes of trying different things, I concluded that the 3COM driver does not support Internet Sharing. There used to be a patch that would get the Widcomm driver to work with this card, but the patch had been removed from the site.

So after playing with BT for like 15 minutes I decided to give BT HotSync another try… This time I went into the BIOS settings of my POS Dell D600, disabled the IR port, probably disabled the COM port also, not quite sure what I did. Anyway, I booted it back to Windows XP (vs. Gentoo), and wala!! I see COM5 listed in HotSync… Went to the Treo and tried a BT Sync, it worked…

Amazingly all this, plus Internet Sharing, worked out of the box with my PowerBook. LOL!

Windows sucks!!
