Misinformation on Fortune’s article on 802.11n

I cannot believe a publication like Fortune had articles that contain blatantly incorrect information. Senior editor Peter H Lewis should’ve at least consulted Wikipedia (here and here) before he wrote this article.

Risk of upgrading your WiFi devices now is minimal – Jan. 3, 2006

You may already see wireless network devices on the shelves marked “pre-n,” and for most people the risk of buying now is minimal.

Two dozen of the top network equipment makers have agreed to align behind the 11n specs, and even if changes occur between now and formal ratification, it’s likely that the hardware you buy today can be upgraded easily with a software download.

The first WiFi devices were based on a 10-megabit-per-second 802.11b
standard. Then came 11g, with a theoretical top data transfer speed of
54 megabits per second. (In practice, consumers rarely saw such speeds,
and 20 mbps to 25 mbps is about average.) Another variant, 802.11a,
intended for moving video over short distances, also took hold.

Netgear’s new WiFi Skype phone

Now we’re talking, I’ll definitely be interested in one of these. When WiFi gets even more pervasive, we might even be able to ditch our cellphones for WiFi Skype phones.

Press Release Detail – NETGEAR

Unlike other devices that must connect with a PC, NETGEAR?s Skype WiFi phone will work wherever a consumer is connected to a wireless Internet access point ? be that in a home, office, cafe, open public hotspot, or any open municipal wireless access point being deployed worldwide.

audio still drops with Airport Express v6.3 fw

Music still drops, I’m going to pick up a router+switch with ethernet ports and do AirTunes over ethernet instead… Not sure which router to get though, there is this Linksys “Wireless-G Cable Gateway” that is a cable modem, .g AP, and ethernet switch, all-in-one… might get that coz I think Comcast will start charging me $5/month for my cable modem soon…

AE and Extreme fw update

Damn, I’m downloading this right now as I type, maybe this would fix my AE audio dropping issue, but somehow I highly doubt it, because I think the problem is microwaves interfering with the WiFi as they both use the ISM band…

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW):

Apple and their engineers do seem to have been reading the endless posts on their support forums about dropping Airport Express audio streams and other issues. Tonight, they’ve released two firmware updates–one for the Express (v6.3) and one for the Extreme (v5.7)–that claim to address this and other issues.I’ve updated the base stations in my WDS network and the only issue I was having–dropped streaming audio–hasn’t recurred, so tentatively, I’ll say it’s been a successful update.
